Africa’s fastest man, Ferdinand Omanyala, has officially joined the world of football in an interesting capacity.

The celebrated sprinter has been appointed to the board of management of FKF Premier League debutants APS Bomet FC, a move seen as a major boost for the club both in visibility and ambition.

Omanyala is among high-profile names brought in to steer the newly-promoted side, alongside triple Olympic 1500m champion Faith Kipyegon

The board will be chaired by Bishop Fred Akama, and is set to be unveiled next week.

They held their inaugural meeting on Friday, 18 July, where they began rolling out their strategic plan for the club.

This comes after APS Bomet earned promotion to the 2025/26 FKF Premier League, finishing second in the National Super League (NSL).

The decisive moment came dramatically after the FKF Leagues and Competitions Committee awarded them a 2-0 victory over Kibera Black Stars, following an abandoned match on 1 June.

That clash at Jamhuri Sports Complex was halted in the 79th minute when crowd trouble erupted after APS Bomet equalized.

FKF later ruled that Kibera Black Stars were responsible for the abandonment after fans and assaulted assistant referee Eunice Njeri and failed to provide adequate security.

With the three points from that ruling, APS Bomet hit 64 points, a tally that none of the chasing teams could surpass, thereby sealing automatic promotion.

They consequently joined Nairobi United, who had already clinched a Premier League spot.

For Omanyala, the boardroom role adds to what has already been a packed 2025 season on the track.

He kicked off with a 100m win at the AK meet in Thika, placed third at the ASA Grand Prix I (10.22), and bounced back with a 10.08 win at the second leg.

His standout moments included a 10.02 dash at the Uganda Trials, a Kenyan win in the 4×100m relay, and a 10.00 finish for second place at the Botswana Grand Prix.

He also competed in several Diamond League meetings, including a second-place finish in Xiamen, third in Rome (10.01), and helped Kenya make history at the World Relays in Guangzhou, where they qualified for the World Championships 4×100m relay.

Omanyala also shattered national and African records in the 150m with a 14.70s performance at the Atlanta City Games.

At the National Athletics Trials, he continued his strong form with a 10.08 win in the 100m, and a second-place finish in the 200m behind Zablon Ekwam

Despite several near misses, his mission to break the sub-10 barrier again this season remains in full swing.
