The Diamond League final is set for Zurich on 7 and 8 September

Soft spoken Jackline Chepkoech seems to be settling well in her new-found role of Kenya's steeplechase queens, walking in the footsteps of her role model Beatrice Chepkoech

On Friday night, the Commonwealth Games 3,000m steeplechase champion destroyed a star-studded field at the Brussels Diamond League (DL) to secure a maiden DL victory at just 18.

Jackline clocked 9:02.43, lowerjng her personal best (PB) time by a massive 13 seconds, barely a month after running her previous PB in Birmingham.

In a race that had been touted as a world record attempt, it was clear early on in the race that Beatrice's world record would remain intact following a 3:00.85 opening kilometre.

The pace dropped slightly in the middle section as 2000m was reached in 6:04.90 Jackline who was already leading by then, continued to pull away from the field.

World silver medallist Werkuha Getachew finished strongly but was still a second shy at the end, taking the runner-up spot in 9:03.44. Kenyan-born Bahrain Winfred Yavi was third in 9:08.03.

Jackline's victory adds to her 2021 World Under-20 title and her Commonwealth Games victory as she looks to torch the firsl in Zurich at the DL final for a wild card to next year's world championships in Budapest.

The women's 3,000m steeplechase World Athletics Under-20 champion Faith Cherotich emerged fourth in a PB of 9:09.63 as the World record holder settled for eleventh in her first race since May.
