Kenya's Sebastian Sawe is the reigning Valencia Marathon champion, having won in 2:02:05 last December, just 12 seconds off the fastest ever debut set by his compatriot, late Kelvin Kiptum, two years before

Two-time Boston Marathon champion Evans Chebet plans to get back into competitive racing this December, with a new personal best (PB) in mind, after a silent season that saw him miss the opportunity to race his favourite course in the US.

The 2:03:00 runner last made headlines in November last year after placing second to Abdi Nageeye in 2:07:45 at the New York City Marathon, in what was his second World Marathon Major (WMM) of 2024, having finished third in Boston.

After wins in 2022 and 2023 at the Boston Marathon, the 36-year-old returned in 2024, chasing a three-peat, but a niggly injury saw him lose out in a race won by Ethiopia’s Sisay Lemma (2:06:17) with Mohamed Esa (2:06:58) in second place.

Having withdrawn from the 2023 New York City Marathon due to injury, Chebet lined up for the 2024 race, keen to make amends, but was outsprinted in the home stretch.

“Thank you, New York City Marathon! You are so special to me! Looking forward to seeing you next year…once again,” he shared on Instagram.

His promise is, however, never to be, as another injury, picked up in training three months ago, has forced him to ditch New York and prepare for a return to Valencia, the venue of his PB.

“I have been running the last two seasons injured, and that has really affected my performance. I decided to prepare for a Fall race to give myself time to recover, and I had been training for New York before this injury.

With the race set for 2 November, I did not feel ready for the challenge. After consultations with my team, we settled on Valencia Marathon set for 7 December,” Chebet explained, in an interview with Mozzart Sport.

As he returns to Valencia since his debut on 6 December 2020, Chebet is looking to go quicker than his PB.

“I am targeting a sub-2:03 race. I ran my PB here, and I know what to expect from the course. The elite entry list has not been made public yet, but I am hoping for a quality field that could push me to better times,” Chebet added.
