The 2024 Olympic 800m champion showcased his class and tactical maturity against a high-calibre field, surging past the competition with a powerful kick over the final 250 metres.

Wanyonyi’s execution was near flawless. He remained among the leading pack early in the race, keeping close tabs on Poland’s Mateusz Sieradzki, who led through the first 400m.

As the bell rang, the race turned tactical and tense. With 250 metres to go, Wanyonyi unleashed his trademark kick, pulling away with resilience and remarkable upper-body drive down the homestretch.

Despite a tense final stretch, he held off a late charge from Algeria’s Mohamed Ali Gouaned Attaoui, who clocked 1:42.90 to finish second. Sieradzki completed the podium in 1:43.06.

Wanyonyi's win was particularly meaningful, coming just weeks after a rare stumble at the Rabat Diamond League on Sunday, 25 May, where he was forced to settle for third in 1:43.37 despite being the headline act.

His Oslo performance marked a clear return to dominance and underlined his readiness for the season.

The 19-year-old Kenyan has had a busy and diverse 2024 season. He kicked things off with a win at the Kenya Cross Country Championships in February, clocking 6:14 in the 2km loop race ahead of Reynold and Timothy Cheruiyot.

In April, he stunned the field at the Kingston Grand Slam 1500m, taking victory in 3:35.18 over Olympic medallists.

Though he settled for second in his preferred 800m in Kingston behind Canada’s Marco Arop (1:45.13), Wanyonyi quickly rebounded with another dominant outing at the Adidas Adizero Road to Records Mile in Germany, running 3:52.45 to comfortably beat a strong American contingent.
