The result marks a strong start to the season for Chepchirchir, who continues to build on her breakout performances last year

Nelly Chepchirchir produced an outstanding sprint in the final 50 metres amd clocked 4:05:00 to claim the women’s 1500m at the Wanda Diamond League in Doha on Friday night.

Although the race was rather slow, Chepchirchir made her intentions known from onset, running from the front and controlling the momentum.

She, however, had to fend off her compatriot and fellow Olympian Susan Ejore, who finished second in 4:06.27, for the brilliant 1-2 finish for Kenya.

Great Britain’s Jemma Reekie completed the podium in 4:07.33.

The result marks a strong start to the season for Chepchirchir, who continues to build on her breakout performances last year.

Chepchirchir, who has been in great form, lived up to the billing in the Qatari capital, staying among the leading pack before storming off in the final lap.

No one wanted to go with the pacemaker in a slow women’s 1500m, and in the last lap burn-up, Chepchirchir strode clear in 4:05.00 from Susan Ejore as Britain’s Reekie was third.

Morocco's Benkassem Khadija started the race, taking charge of the first 800 metres before Chepchirchir overtook her with 300 metres to the tape.

Another Kenyan, Gateri Muthoni, came home 13th with a time of 4:08.96.

This is the fourth time Chepchirchir has won a race this season and gives her hope of enjoying a great campaign that will culminate in the World Championships.
