The feat means Kenya now has four medals in total - 1 gold, 2 silvers and a bronze

Kenya added to its medal tally at the Tokyo 2025 Summer Deaflympics after Serah Kimani Wangari won bronze in the women’s 10,000m at the Komazawa Olympic Park Gymnasium on Tuesday, 18 November.

Wangari, one of two Kenyans in the final, eventually finished fifth in a time of 37:24.37, but was elevated to the bronze medal position after two athletes in front of her were disqualified for running in the wrong shoes.

The bronze, in turn, added to Kenya’s medal tally at the Games, to four so far, following a hugely successful day on the track on Monday, 17 November.

Speaking after the race won by Mexico’s Juarez Lourdes in a time of 36:17.07, Wambui said: “It is amazing to win this bronze medal because it was such a tough race. The athletes whom we were competing against were very strong."

Commenting on her fifth-place finish turning to bronze, the 2022 Games silver medalist added: “Because I had no injury, I was disappointed to finish fifth.

I was shocked when I was later informed that I was actually the bronze medallist. Everything happens for a reason, and I’m delighted to be awarded the bronze medal.”

Finland’s Sarah Elise scooped silver medal in 37:13.45, while Kenya’s other athlete in the race - Grancy Kandagor - finished a disappointing 10th in 45:31.06.

Elsewhere on the golf course, Kenya’s golfers struggled to place themselves in contention for medals as they ranked low on the leaderboards.

Golfing sensation Jacinta Njeri hit a Round One score of 113 to rank bottom at the end of the first day proceedings, with a mark of +41.

The men’s duo of Gilbert Alikula and Adan Wario also laboured hard at Wakasu Golf Links, finishing 40th and 41st with scores of 98 (+26) and 107 (+35) respectively.
