Both athletes earned automatic qualifications to the semi final.

Kenyan duo of Wiseman Were and William Mutunga punched tickets to the semi-finals of the 400m hurdles with the latter posting a season’s best time of 49.99.

Before the start of the race, Jamaican Kemar Mowatt, Keitumetse Maitseo from Botswana and Namibia’s Andre Retief failed to take to the track with their lanes empty due to unclear circumstances.

Another one of the athletes Daniel Baul from Papua New Guinea pulled out of the race after the gun went off as he suffered a hamstring injury just 20 meters into the race.

Kenyan representative Wiseman Were in the race was a bit slow off the blocks as he trailed to Nigerian Ezekiel Nathaniel and briefly dropped to third on the second bend.

Were who seemed to have his tactics spot on had the burst of energy in the final 100m to outsprint the Nigerian and cut the tape at a time of 50.3 seconds to seal a place in the semis.

In the second heat, Victor Ntweng failed to start the race as the race that included the reigning Commonwealth Games champion in the discipline Kyron McMaster.

William Mutunga who flew the Kenyan flag in the second heat posted a slow start to the race with McMaster opening an early gap and even had time to check off his shoulder while coming into the final bend.

Mutunga wherever recovered well to finish third just behind McMaster who took his foot off the gas looking to protect his hamstring injury and Jaheel Hyde who finished first at a time of 49.60.
