Chebet set her season best of 14:38.21 to bag gold in the 5000m.
Former World Under-20 5000m champion, Beatrice Chebet reigned supreme in the Commonwealth Games 5000m after claiming Kenya’s sixth gold medal as she credited her training and discipline.
The World Cross Country champion clocked her third season best of 14:38.21 as her compatriot Selah Jepleting settled for bronze with Commonwealth Games 10,000m champion Eilish McColgan coming second.
Chebet admitted that she was surprised by her victory as he noted that she has had a spectacular season and went on to open up on what fired her up to victory.
“I didn't expect to win but after winning silver in the World Championships and gold in the African Championships, I can say that this has been a good year,”
What made me win was training, and discipline which really came in handy. Next year we have the World Championship and World's Cross Country and I look to prepare for both,” said Chebet.
Her victory marked the last gold that Kenya won with the Commonwealth Games closing on Monday 8th August but the final day has no Kenyan athletes competing.
Chebet was thankful for her victory as she intimated that they had to deliver with most Kenyans having their eyes on them to bag another gold at the games.
“I would first like to thank God for enabling me to win gold, the race wasn't easy but what I'd like to thank God for even more is running my season best which means I'm making progress, we both got to the podium which I'm also thankful for.
We were ready because we knew Kenya was depending on us and everyone had their eyes on us and we wanted to get to the podium,” added Chebet.
