Kenya’s Paris Olympic Games double gold medalist Beatrice Chebet will seek to repeat last year’s world-breaking heroics when she returns to Eugene in July.
Chebet, 25, is the latest athlete to be confirmed for this year’s Eugene Diamond League meeting - The Prefontaine Classic - scheduled for 5 July at Hayward Field at the University of Oregon.
Two-time Diamond League champion will hope to repeat her exploits at the same venue last year, when she went on to set the 10,000m world record with a time of 28.54.14.
In the event, Chebet will be joined by Ethiopian star Gudaf Tsegay, who has also broken a world record at the arena.
Tsegay, running in the 2023 Diamond League Final in Eugene, set the current 5000m world record of 14:00.21.
The two adversaries will be joined by another trio of fast-runners including: Medina Eisa, Tsigie Gebreselama, and Ejgayehu Taye.
Eisa, currently ranked second in the world over 5000m, and boasts a personal record of 14:16.54, will be making her debut at Hayward Field, as Taye and Gebreselama return to a place they have set their personal best marks at.
Taye, ranked third in the world over 5,000m, set her personal best mark of 14:12.98 at the 2022 Prefontaine Classic, while Gebrerselama, ranked fourth globally, ran 14:18.74 ran at last year’s event, bettering her previous best mark by over 20 seconds.
Chebet began her track season and Diamond League title defense last month in Xiamen, and will also be part of a studded list that will compete in the 3000m race in Rabat this weekend.
