After claiming his first Olympic gold medal in 2024, Wanyonyi is hoping to extend his dominance in one of the most fiercely competitive disciplines in athletics as he aims for a third straight 800m Diamond League title in 2025.
After opening his season with a 2km victory in February’s national cross country championships, Wanyonyi lay low until April, where he made headlines at the Grand Slam Track, racing the 1500m distance, and taking down the Olympic podium of Cole Hocker, Josh Kerr, and Yared Nuguse at Kingston.
He completed the meet with a second-place finish, behind nemesis Marco Arop in the 800m.
On Saturday, 26 April, he was back on the roads, this time at the Adizero: Roads to Records one-mile road race, carrying the day with a 3:52.45 show against a formidable field that had the American duo of Hobbs Kessler and Nico Young completing the podium in 3:54.34 and 3:54.50, respectively.
Meanwhile, Chebet, the 5000m Diamond Trophy winner in two of the last three seasons, will drop down to the 3000m. She opened her Diamond League season in Xiamen on Saturday, 26 April, clocking 14:27.12 to deny nemesis Gudaf Tsegay (14:28.18) and Birke Haylom (14:28.80).
Chebet enjoyed a particularly breathtaking year in 2024, taking Olympic gold in the 5000m and 10,000m before winning the 5000m DL trophy in Brussels.
On 31 December 2024, at the Cursa dels Nassos, Chebet broke Agnes Jebet's mixed 5-kilometre world record of 14:13, running 13:54. In setting this record, she became the first woman to break the 14-minute barrier on any surface.
