Beatrice Chebet awarded Honorary Doctorate by Kenyan University

World 10,000m Beatrice Chebet has been awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters by the University of Kabianga.

The honour was conferred on Friday, 14 November, during the university’s 13th graduation ceremony in Kericho County, where the 25-year-old was celebrated for her exceptional contribution to global athletics and her role as an inspiration to young athletes across the country.

Chebet is enjoying a season that many athletes can only dream of.

This year alone, she clinched double gold at the World Athletics Championships in Japan, triumphing in both the 10,000m and 5,000m.

Her victory in the latter saw her outpace compatriot and middle-distance icon Faith Kipyegon, adding another chapter to her growing legacy.

The honorary doctorate comes in a year where Chebet has yet to lose a race.

She has collected one cross country win and four consecutive Diamond League victories, showcasing her unmatched form on the global stage.

She began her 2025 season in emphatic style, retaining her crown at the LXXXI Elgoibar Cross Country Juan Muguerza Memorial in Spain on January 5.

The win guaranteed her $10,000 (Ksh1.3 million) in prize money, in addition to undisclosed appearance fees.

She then launched a flawless Diamond League campaign, beginning in Xiamen on April 26,where she opened her season with a 5,000m victory worth $20,000 (Ksh2.6 million) thanks to the Diamond+ prize structure.

She followed it up in Rabat on May 25 with another commanding win in the 3,000m, clocking 8:11.56 to secure $10,000, before returning to her speciality 5,000m in Rome on June 6, where she stormed to a meeting record of 14:03.69 to earn another $20,000 under the Diamond+ category.

Chebet capped her streak at the Prefontaine Classic on July 5, delivering her most iconic performance yet as she shattered the 5,000m world record in under 14 minutes.

So far this season, Chebet has amassed $120,000 (Ksh15.5 million) in prize money from just five races.
