This will become the second year in a row where the Eugene meet will be used as a Kenyan qualifier, having been utilised to select the men’s and women’s 10,000m teams for the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.
The event had prior to that been used to select a Kenyan team in 2012.
“Kenya has a rich history and connection with this prestigious event where several of our athletes have, over the years, shone and etched their names in record books with memorable performances,” AK’s statement read.
“AK is grateful to the organising committee of the Prefontaine Classic for providing us with this competitive environment and world-class facilities to conduct this exercise.”
At last year’s edition, Beatrice Chebet secured her ticket for the Paris Games with a women’s 10,000m world record time of 28:54.14, and was joined on the plane to the Summer Games by Lilian Kasait and Margaret Chelimo.
Chebet will be among the lead Kenyan athletes hoping to seal a place to Tokyo this year, as she headlines a studded women’s 5000m field that will see her also go head-to-head with the Ethiopian trio of Medina Eisa, Tsigie Gebreselama and Egayehu Taye.
The World Championships qualifying mark for the men’s 10,000m is 27:00.00, with the women’s 5,000m target time standing at 14:50.00.
Selection of athletes to represent the country in the men’s 5,000m and women’s 10,000m will be undertaken during the national trials in Nairobi at a yet-to-be-communicated date and venue.
