Ferdinand Omanyala is not done breaking records! At the Kip Keino Classic, against a field that had multiple World and Olympic champion Justin Gatlin and the fastest man this year Trayvon Bromell, the Kenyan clocked a new national record 9.77 seconds.
Omanyala broke his own national record of 9.86 seconds set at an season meet in Austria right after the Olympics.
For a second-place finish behind Bromell, Omanyala also broke South African Akani Simbine's African record 9.84.
Going into the meet, Omanyala and Gatlin had exchanged friendly fire with each eager for a showdown against the other. Omanyala, in an interview even went as far as predicting a 9.70 which he achieved
It was, however, Bromell who capped his season with another world leading time of 9.76 seconds as Gatlin clocked 10.03 for third place.
"Running on home ground feels good and I am happy with the time. I could feel that I would ran fast and running an African record and the second-fastest time this year feels good. Now we just have to keep working and with every race we move closer to that world record," said an elated Omanyala.
The winner, Bromell says he is happy to end the season on a high. "The season has had its ups and downs and alot of dynamics went into my competitions. I even questioned my purpose. I had to put in work to bounce back after the Tokyo disappointment and I am happy," he said.
