The 2nd AK meeting will be held at the Kapsokwony High School Ground in Bungoma

All eyes will be on world cross country senior women's 8km bronze medallist Agnes Jebet Ngetich as she competes in the second Athletics Kenya (AK) cross-country meeting penciled for Saturday 21 at Kapsokwony High School in Bungoma County.

The youngster who is fresh from a second-place finish in the Kericho cross country meet held on October 15 will be using this meeting as her springboard ahead of the World Cross Country Championships scheduled for March next year in Belgrade, Serbia.

“I have started my training ahead of the global show in Belgrade, where I want to improve on my bronze medal,” she said Ngetich.

She won her first medal in the senior category at the World Cross Country Championships in Bathurst, Australia. The 22-year-old clocked 0:34:00 to finish third in the senior women’s 10km race, behind winner and fellow countrywoman, Beatrice Chebet (0:33:48) and Ethiopian Tsigie Gebreselama (0:33:56), who finished second.

The Kapsokwony event will be her first AK meeting since the season kicked off in Machakos last weekend.

“I want to have a good start in the series and earn an automatic qualification for the national trials. I want to run well come Saturday in Kapsokwony,” she said.

AK western region secretary, Homer Mugalitsi, welcomed all the competing athletes to Bungoma, noting that they expected over 500 athletes to compete in various races. The Western region has always been hosting these trials in December, but this time the dates fell in October.

"We are ready to host the event and we expect many athletes to participate," Mugalitsi offered.

Sandra Chebet won the women's 10km race in Machakos in a time of 34:02:6 and was followed by Mercy Chepkorir (35:04:4) and Teresa Cherotich (35.09:1). Vincent Mutai won the men’s 10km title in 29:39:1 followed by Arthunus Kioko (29:42:2) and Brian Kiptoo (30:07:6) respectively.

Kenya’s Agnes Ngetich set a new world 10km record with her victory at the World Athletics Elite Label road race in Brasov, Romania on September 10.

The Kamwosor-based runner shattered the women-only world 10km record by clocking 29:24 after taking seconds off the previous record set by the late Agnes Tirop during the Herzogenaurach in 2021.
