The Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) has come out to explain why the Safari Sevens will be hosted outside Nairobi for the first time in the tournament's illustrious 28-year history.
The event will be held from Friday 11 to Sunday 13 October at the Kenyatta Stadium, Machakos.
Addressing the matter, KRU commercial director Harriet Okach noted that the venue change was aimed at marketing Kenya as a sporting destination.
The event will give fans a rugby experience outside the city. It will also enable fans to connect with their favourite local and international players.
“Safari Sevens is an international tournament event sanctioned by World Rugby. It is important to market Kenya as a sporting destination.
Let people know that we are doing that by ensuring that the venue is just not within Nairobi; the city but also other parts of the country.
This year, it is Machakos. Next year, you never know,” Okach said.
She went on to explain that Machakos emerged as the ideal host since it offers a contemporary ambience and is feasible for fans and players as accommodation and other essential services are easily available.
“Guys should know that we chose Machakos not just for its proximity to Nairobi, but they have very good accommodation services,” she offered.
This year’s edition promises to elevate the experience for fans, and players who are eager to enjoy the genuine hospitality and welcoming spirit of Machakos residents.
So far, 16 teams (eight men’s and eight women’s) have confirmed participation.
Last year’s Safari Sevens marked a triumphant return to the schedule after a hiatus in 2022. In an epic showdown at the RFUEA Grounds, Kenya Sevens secured a thrilling 19-0 victory over Samurai Sevens in the final, retaining their title.
Led by head coach Kevin Wambua, the Shujaa squad entered the final undefeated, eyeing a historic back-to-back title. Their opponents, Samurai, reclaimed the championship they last held in 2019 with a 21-14 victory over Shujaa.
Participating teams:
Men’s Category: Shujaa (Kenya), Morans (Kenya), Uganda Cranes, Zimbabwe, Qatar, Shogun Rugby (formerly Samurai Rugby), Tropics 7s, Mayotte
