Kenya’s national sevens teams, Shujaa and the Lionesses, will be aiming to wrap up their HSBC SVNS 2 campaign on a high when they take to the pitch for the final leg in São Paulo, Brazil, scheduled for Saturday, 28 to Sunday, 29 March.
Both sides head into the decisive round with contrasting fortunes from the previous leg in Montevideo.
Shujaa impressed with a third-place finish, while the Lionesses endured a difficult outing, finishing sixth with just a single win.
The São Paulo leg now presents a final opportunity for redemption, especially for the Lionesses, whose promotion hopes hang in the balance.
The Simon Odongo-coached Lionesses face a must-deliver scenario.
Anything short of a top-three finish will effectively end their chances of qualifying for HSBC SVNS Division 1 in 2027.
Their campaign has been turbulent from the onset, having finished fifth in the opening leg in Nairobi with just one win and 12 points.
Their struggles continued in Montevideo, Uruguay (March 21–22), where despite managing one victory, they finished last among the six teams, collecting only 10 points.
That outcome saw them drop to the bottom of the standings with 22 points heading into the final leg in São Paulo.
For Shujaa, the picture is more promising. They currently sit third overall with 32 points, four ahead of fourth-placed Uruguay and eight clear of Canada and Belgium.
A top-four finish in São Paulo should be enough to keep them firmly on course for qualification to the World Championship stage.
The Lionesses will kick off their campaign against table-toppers Argentina on Saturday at 5:28 PM EAT, before facing South Africa at 8:18 PM and Spain at 11:05 PM later that evening.
On Sunday, they return to action against China at 6:06 PM EAT before concluding their campaign against hosts Brazil at 10:02 PM EAT.
Shujaa begin their campaign earlier on Saturday with a clash against Germany at 4:22 PM EAT.
They will then face Belgium at 7:12 PM before wrapping up day one against Canada at 10:21 PM.
On Sunday, the Kevin Wambua-coached side will take on the USA at 5:44 PM before a potentially decisive fixture against Uruguay at 8:34 PM.
At the conclusion of the three-leg SVNS 2 series, the top four teams will advance to a playoff competition alongside the top eight teams from the World Championship Series.
Ultimately, only the top eight teams across the combined competition will secure spots in SVNS Division 1 for the 2027 season, while the bottom four will drop to Division 2.
