Onyala guided Shujaa back to the prestigious HSBC SVNS SERIES
Kenya 7s national team captain Vincent Onyala is still enveloped in excitement days after being included in the World SVNs Series Madrid 7s dream team.
Onyala played a key role in Kenya 7s’ performance in Madrid, scoring several tries, including the first try in the qualifiers match against Germany.
His exceptional leadership skills have been crucial in guiding Shujaa throughout the Challenger Series. He was co-captained by Tony Omondi of Mwamba RFC.
In an exclusive with Mozzart Sport, Onyala thanked his teammates for the support and dedication, noting that it made his leadership role considerably easier. He explained that their collective effort and positive attitude was instrumental in motivating the team environment.
“When you are dining with the best, being counted among the best is inevitable. Without the support of the boys, it could not have happened. All gratitude goes back to them,” he offered.
The captain went on to explain that his assistant Omondi was also instrumental in his service delivery. Omondi brings the rational type of leadership while Onyala brought the opposite, striking a good balance.
“Just containing the thought process of the team. The generation that we have is a puzzle and you need to bring them collectively to work as a unit,” he averred.
Onyala was among the vintage players retained when coach Kevin Wambua took over. The rest of the squad was made up of young people, and the captain could not ask for better teammates.
“Having very young people achieve such a great achievement should be the highlight of all these. It is a team that only had an imagination of what HSBC looked like. Going into Madrid, we had jitters but once we played our game against Madrid, the jitters went over the roof,” he disclosed.
He was included in the dream team alongside Juan Ramos who also played a key role in the playoffs promotion, helping the Spaniards retain their position as a core side.
Argentina’s Matteo Graziano, who featured in the Grand Final, was also included in the team and completes the forwards list.
The backs in the Dream Team are French duo Antoine Dupont and Rayan Rebbadj, who emerged as champions. Jerry Tuwai and Ponipate Loganimasi were the Fijians in the Dream Team.
