Unvaccinated players barred from Kenya Cup

Kenya Cup is set to kick off on Saturday with six matches lined up.

The Kenya Rugby Union has issued a directive barring unvaccinated players from taking part in the 2021-2022 Kenya Cup as part of the Covid-19 safety protocols.

The communication means that players who are yet to be fully vaccinated against Covid-19 will be locked out of the Kenya Cup with clubs to ultimately determine action on staff who do not receive the jab.

Kenya Cup is slated for a Saturday kick-off with six matches lined up as Homeboyz RFC make a comeback after sitting out the 2021 season.

The Deejays revealed that it was not able to guarantee the safety and wellbeing of its members at that time due to the surge in cases back in March.

“We regret to announce that we have opted not to participate in this year’s Kenya Cup league since we are unable to guarantee the safety, health and wellbeing of our club members, staff and our league participants owing to the pandemic,”

“We hope to return to play as soon as we find the environment relatively manageable,” the club announced back in March.

This comes after a number of teams were hit by Covid-19 outbreaks last season with a number of matches postponed as a precaution to curb the spread of the virus.

The communication coincides with the government making it mandatory for Kenyans to possess a Covid-19 vaccine certificate to access in-person services in government offices starting December 21.
