He is the second Kenyan to join the club after Monate Akuei
Kenya 7s International Timothy Mmasi has set himself a target for his first season with New York Old Blue Rugby Club; to propel them to greater heights.
The instrumental player moved from his former club Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) Rugby in June this year, and has since bolstered Old Blue’s performance, leading them to two victories in the ongoing America Rugby Premiership league.
Speaking to Mozzart Sport on his stay in New York, USA, Mmasi was pleased that his rugby career was finally taking shape. He was the second Kenyan at the club, joining Monate Akuei who is the current captain.
“I am very excited. I've always wanted to play overseas, so yes my growth curve is steady, not yet there since my goal in to play in the top league,” he averred.
According to Mmasi, one of the most prominent obstacles he faces is the cold weather. Adapting to the frigid temperatures and unpredictable weather conditions proved to be a significant adjustment for him on and off the pitch.
“The conditions were tough at first, it hot and humid during the summer. With the different tournament set up of 1 day here playing five game all through to the finals, it was so draining,” he offered.
Despite that, the center/backrower noted that he is gaining more knowledge and skills that will make him a professional rugby player, a dream he holds dear. Unlike in Kenya, rugby in the USA is semi-professional, giving an opportunity to hone his skills well.
“Here in the US playing semi pro, we train for 4 hours a week, then play on Saturday, that is two hours on Tuesday and Thursday,” Mmasi told Mozzart Sport.
Besides becoming a professional player, Mmasi has set his gaze at leaving a positive mark in the upcoming rugby generation, including his son Eden.
“It's all about bringing a purpose in someone's life, it’s more of moving with humanity; my family, including my son Eden who really looks up on me. It’s just the beginning of many. I am grateful for every opportunity,” he revealed.
Mmasi played for Kenya 7s before moving to Kenya Simbas and was part of the Currie Cup campaign where Simbas finished eighth.
Old Blue Rugby Club
Established in 1963 by Columbia alums, Old Blue Rugby has maintained a strong connection with Columbia University and the Columbia RFC throughout its history.
The club has benefitted from a consistent influx of Columbia coaches and athletes, further solidifying the bond between the club and the university.
As Old Blue Rugby prepares for the upcoming Summer Sevens second leg set to take place in Newport, the addition of Mmasi to their lineup is expected to bolster their chances.
In the previous season, the club achieved remarkable success, securing three out of five Cup titles.
