Strathmore Leos eye Kenya Cup title

The team finished third overall in the standings in their first season after regaining promotion back to the top tier

They say dreams are free, right? And if so, that is what varsity side Strathmore Leos are doing just days before the new 2021/2022 Kenya Cup season commences on Saturday 27 November – dreaming to lift the overall Kenya Cup title.

In the 2020 season where the team played in the top tier again after earning promotion back from the second tier Kenya Rugby Union Championship, the Louis Kisia coached side surpassed expectations as they finished the season in third place behind champions KCB and second placed Kabras Sugar beating the likes of Kenya Harlequins and record Kenya cup champions Nondescripts.

With the new season commencing in under a week, their head coach says there is no achieving anything less as the team eyes bettering the success of the previous campaign and giving a better account of themselves having acquired enough experience that was sometimes lacking for them in the big games having just been promoted.

“So far we have been well prepared with our preseason. We are in week eight of our preparations where we have played various friendlies including a match against Impala. Definitely we want to give a good account of ourselves after the massive campaign we had last season. That means it can never go down than number three. If not number three then number one. That is our target this season. We know it is not going to be easy but it is an achievable task if we put our heads together. Our players are now experienced enough so they can take on the big boys,” their head coach told Mozzart Sport.

With KCB well recharged for the season after lifting their fourth consecutive Kenya Cup title and Kabras Sugar hurting from their inability to finally clinch something at the end of the season, can Leos step in and disrupt the status quo? The head coach certainly believes so.
