Kenya have two matches remaining against Portugal and Hong Kong to salvage their historic World Cup quest.

Kenya Simbas captain Daniel Sikuta has admitted to the team paying the consequences of making too many mistakes in their opening match at the 2023 Rugby World Cup Final Qualification Tournament (The Repechage) currently ongoing in Dubai where they succumbed to a heavy 68-14 defeat against USA on Sunday.

In the encounter played at the Sevens Stadium, the Paul Odera coached side failed to get going and were punished for their litany of errors that saw them stumble in their opening match of the scheduled three games where they are in search of the single remaining ticket to Rugby World Cup 2023 set to be held in France.

Making his assessment following the clash, the Kabras Sugar captain noted that the USA took advantage of their mistakes, which included too many unwarranted handling errors and poor lineouts, and punished them for the blunders which he said was unacceptable at the level they had gotten to as only one out of the four teams would be getting the ticket to qualify for the prestigious tournament in France.

“What we wanted to do never went according to our plan. We know the mistakes we made and USA capitalized on them. In this setup, if you make those many errors you get the scoreboard going,” Sikuta said after the match.

In losing the match, Kenya however managed to score two tries through Brian Juma and exciting youngster Joshua Weru with Sikuta admitting they managed to do that as a result of tweaking the game plan to fit the game.

“We had to change and adopt what we have been playing and our quick tap game was on so we capitalized on it and the results were massive,” he added.

Kenya have two remaining games against Portugal and Hong Kong as they try to save their historic World Cup quest.

In the competition, the team accruing the most competition points in the four team tournament will secure the 20th and final spot at France 2023 where they will take their place in Pool C alongside Wales, Australia, Fiji and Georgia.
