With no easy games on the horizon, Wambua emphasized the importance of treating every match as a final.
Kenya 7s national team head coach Kevin Wambua is confident in his squad's chances as they prepare for the challenging competition ahead in the third leg of the HSBC World Rugby 7s Series, the Perth 7s. The tournament will take place from Friday, January 24, to Sunday, January 26, in Australia.
Shujaa has been placed in a tough Pool C alongside Fiji, Australia, and Uruguay. The team aims for a top-eight finish, and their mixed history with these sides promises a weekend of gripping rugby action.
Speaking during the naming of the team, head coach Wambua acknowledged the difficulty of their pool but remained optimistic about their readiness. His confidence stems from their one-week camp at the Menengai Oilers’ training facility in Nakuru, where they sharpened their skills.
“We’ve had a productive week of camp in Nakuru, where we analyzed our performances in Dubai and Cape Town and prepared for what our opposition will bring in Perth,” Wambua said.
With no easy games on the horizon, Wambua emphasized the importance of treating every match as a final.
He also welcomed the return of experienced players like Vincent Onyala, Anthony Omondi, and Brian Tanga, whose skills and leadership will be vital in navigating the challenging pool.
“Our goal remains to finish in the top eight. We are closely monitoring Australia and Great Britain, as they are the teams ahead of us at positions seven and six,” he added.
Co-captains George Ooro and Samuel Asati echoed Wambua’s sentiments, expressing confidence in the team’s preparation.
“Playing against the best makes you the best. Attack is an opportunity; defense is a must,” Ooro said. “The camp last week was beneficial, and the return of key players will give us an edge. I believe in the team,” Asati said.
Shujaa’s history with Perth 7s opponents
Shujaa’s rivalry with Australia has been laced with drama, most recently seen at the 2024 Paris Olympics, where Kenya suffered a 21-7 defeat in their second game.
However, Shujaa bounced back spectacularly at the Cape Town 7s later that year, defeating the Aussies 19-12 in a spirited comeback despite being down to six men. With such a history, the upcoming clash in Perth is set to be a fascinating encounter.
Facing Fiji is always a monumental task. The Pacific Islanders last defeated Shujaa 31-12 at the 2023 Vancouver 7s, underscoring their dominance. Yet, Kenya has shown they can topple the mighty Fijians, most memorably in their historic 30-7 victory at the 2016 Singapore 7s final, which secured their first-ever HSBC Sevens title. This legendary triumph remains a source of inspiration as Shujaa prepares for another battle against one of the world’s best.
Uruguay, the final team in Pool C, may lack the pedigree of Australia and Fiji but cannot be overlooked. Recently promoted to the HSBC Sevens circuit, the South Americans have proven to be tenacious competitors, fighting to avoid relegation. Their hunger for success makes them a potential spoiler that Kenya will need to handle with precision.
