Kenya 7s proved to be the kings of rugby when they dismantled Mexico 41-0 in the opening match of the HSBC Challenger Series played in Dubai on Friday, 12 January.
The side which has not tasted defeat since the Africa Men's 7s tournament in September, 2023 was looking to extend their fine run. They were fresh from qualifying for the Olympics and they also retained their Safari 7s title in November 2023.
The Kevin Wambua-coached side was visibly hungry for a win, scoring two unconverted tries in the opening minutes of the game thanks to Kevin Wekesa's stunning pace. Wekesa plays his club rugby for Kenya Cup defending champions Kabras RFC.
Following that, it was Strathmore Leos' youngster Nygel Amaitsa breaking the Mexicans defense to go over with his first try of the match and the third for Shujaa. Tony Omondi managed the conversion to see the scores at 17-0.
The determined Shujaa played on, and this time Africa Men's 7s top try scorer Patrick Odongo did what he does best, racing clear to score another try for the Kenyans. This time around, Omondi missed the conversion to see the scores at 22-0 before half time.

John Okoth scored the final converted try for the Shujaa to see them register a 41-0 victory, leading to cheers from the Kenyan fans in the venue.
