The team will need to finish in the top 3 in the qualifiers involving 14 teams.
Shujaa co-captain Herman Humwa has declared that the men’s national 7s rugby side will leave nothing to chance in their bid to qualify for the upcoming 2022 Rugby 7s World Cup that is slated to take place in South Africa from 9-11 September this year.
In a busy month of April that will see Shujaa take part in three 7s tournaments, the Innocent ‘Namcos’ Simiyu currently coached side will head to Uganda on 23 and 24 April to take part in the World Cup qualifiers alongside fourteen other African nations.
Of the 14, only three will book their tickets to South Africa with Humwa reiterating just how important it is for the team to be among the trio to take part in the prestigious tourney.
“The World Cup is a really big deal for us as a team and a country. We have been participating in it since its inception and notably in 2008 when we performed well by reaching the semifinals. It really is a big thing for us to make it to that tournament and for that reason, that makes it our number priority as a team. That is why we need to secure a ticket in the upcoming qualifiers,” the player told Mozzart Sport.
In the teams that are seeking qualification, Kenya will fight for the three available slots alongside hosts Uganda, Tunisia, Namibia, Burundi, Zimbabwe, Senegal, Zambia, Botswana, Burkina Faso, Ghana, Mauritius, Cameroon, Madagascar and Burkina Faso.

Just before the qualifiers, the team has two tournaments on the 2021/2022 HSBC World Rugby 7s Series Circuit where they will play in Singapore (9-10 April) and Vancouver (16-17 April) before embarking on the qualifiers.
“Mentally, the players are settled and some of them are really excited to go and showcase their talent on the main Series. We have really skilled players who will blend well with experienced players. I am really confident that things will look good for us,” Humwa added.
