Kenya closed Day One action with a win over South Africa Academy.

Kenya 7s returned back to winning ways with a 19-12 win over South Africa Academy in the Rugby Africa Solidarity 7s in Cape Town, South Africa.

Shujaa suffered a 27-14 defeat at the hands of South Africa in the second encounter of the day after starting their campaign with a 24-0 win over Zimbabwe.

Kenya made their dominance in possession count early in the game as 2016 Singapore 7s match-winner Nelson Oyoo touched down for the opening try that was converted for a 7-0 lead.

South Africa came back strong and responded with a try of their own as Justin Geduld intercepted a pass to race into the try box to level things before the half time break.

BlitzBokke II picked up from where they left from in the first half as they landed an early unconverted try to lead for the first time in the game 12-7.

Kenya finished strong in the final minutes of the second half as skipper Andrew Amonde powered through the Blitzbokke II defence to level the scores with a conversion putting Shujaa ahead.

Innocent Simiyu tactic of ringing the changes midway through the second half bringing on big guns paid off with Willy Ambaka securing the win for Kenya with a try in the dying minutes as Shujaa emerged 19-12 winners.

The result means Kenya finish the opening day on a high and will resume action on Sunday 9 May against Stellenbosch Academy of Sport (SAS).
