Young playmaker Sinaida Nyachio scored two tries and three conversions, as Kenya Lionesses beat Samoa 31-5 in the opening pool A of the ongoing World Rugby Sevens Repechage in Monaco.

This win secured the Lionesses a spot in the knockout stage, while Samoa was eliminated after consecutive losses.

The Lionesses played their first match of the weekend following the cancellation of their game against Papua New Guinea, which was to be played on Friday.

Papua New Guinea withdrew from the tournament due to player welfare and the team's failure to secure the necessary travel documents to meet their arrival deadline.

The Lionesses started strong, leading 19-0 at halftime. Nyachio opened the scoring with a try and converted it for a 7-0 lead.

Janet Okello then scored, extending the lead to 12-0, though Nyachio missed the conversion.

She redeemed herself by converting Grace Okulo’s try, bringing the score to 19-0.

In the second half, the Lionesses maintained their dominance. Nyachio scored her second try, pushing the lead to 24-0.

Sharon Auma added another try for Kenya after impressive work from Freshia Oduor.

Nyachio converted, making it 31-0 before Samoa’s Linda Fiafia scored a consolation try for her team.

Christabel Lindo nearly scored another try for Kenya but was held up.

Kenya will face Argentina at 6:08 p.m. to determine the top team in the pool.

Lionesses missed the opportunity to automatically qualify for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games after succumbing to a 12-7 defeat against South Africa in the 2023 Rugby Africa Women’s 7s Cup final played in July 2023 in Monastir, Tunisia.

The repechage is their final chance to book a plane to Paris.
