Okaron was appointed AP Warriors Coach early last month
The month of May has proven to be a truly fortunate one for newly appointed Administration Police (AP) Warriors RFC Coach Oscar Okaron. Just a few weeks after his appointment on May 2, Okaron celebrated his 31st birthday on May 19 making it a cause for double celebration.
In the concluded 2022/23 KRU Championship season, AP Warriors RFC kept their push for Championship promotion going, defying the odds to the quarterfinals stage where they narrowly lost 9-3 to Kitale RFC. It was after that season that they advertised for the post of a coach with Okaron being the lucky one. The club which was affiliated with the Kenya Rugby Union in 2013 is now aiming at the stars with the coach on board.
Mozzart Sport caught up with the former Homeboyz RFC gaffer who revealed that he will be hoping to leave a mark on the AP Warriors in the upcoming season.
Prior to his new role, Coach Okaron had led the Deejayz for a season to see them finish ninth during the concluded KRU Kenya Cup season. Although he did not make the playoffs, many who followed his progress with the former Oscar Ayodi’s charges will claim he did well for them with no resources.
Less than a year later, he faces the same challenge with notable differences. With the National 7s Circuit around the corner, Okaron is looking at weighing and developing his charges’ skills in preparation for the nationwide league.
“We will be using the 7s Circuit as a development tournament for my players to develop them skill-wise and experience in preparation for the Nationwide league,” Okaron told Mozzart Sport.
The former Busia Borderrucks Coach also noted that he aims to use the experience gained at the top tier to make AP Warriors a hub of rugby excellence.
“My plans for AP are to build a stable team that will be able to transit from Nationwide to Championship with a wide depth of players that are well skilled. I need to work on my boys’ conditioning like the big boys in the top tier with skill level matching. I see AP Rugby becoming a powerhouse in Rugby with a good depth of players,” he offered.
At the top of his list is leading the boys to the championship league in the upcoming 2023/24 KRU nationwide season. He foresees a future where AP Warriors will play in the top-tier league.
“I am hoping to achieve our target of moving to Championship and eventually Kenya Cup with the support of the management and players,” he said.
Okaron was part of the team that formed Koyonzo Rugby and saw them win the 2022 KSSSA 7s. He was also part of the coaching team that saw Kakamega High School win the KSSSA 7s and 15s titles in 2012 and 2013. In addition, he coached Busia Borderrucks during the 2021/22 season.
Okaron has also had coaching stints with his former alma mater Kakamega High School as well as won two Kenya Technical Institutes' 7s titles with Sigalagala Technical Institute.
