There is only one key change to this year’s calendar, with Embu replacing Kakamega as one of the six host towns.

For the first time, Embu 7s will be part of the official National Sevens Circuit after previously running as a standalone tournament outside the calendar.

Following several successful editions, the event has now secured a permanent spot on the circuit after winning the bid to host the 2025 and 2026 legs.

This marks a significant milestone for Embu, which has steadily built its reputation as a rugby destination and will now join Kenya’s top-tier rugby festival as an official host.

In 2024, despite not being part of the national series, Embu 7s drew notable attention, with Strathmore Leos defending their title in style after a commanding 19-5 victory over the Catholic Monks in the final.

Its past successes have helped it build a strong case for inclusion backed by its growing fanbase and enthusiastic local support.

The absence of Kakamega 7s, famously known as Ingo 7s, will be felt.

Hosted last year by Kenya Cup and Enterprise Cup champions Kabras RFC, the Kakamega leg delivered one of the most memorable finals in recent memory, with Kenya Harlequin edging KCB 17-12 in sudden death to win the title.

The 2025 series will kick off with Driftwood 7s at Mombasa Sports Club on Saturday, 26 to Sunday, 27 July, followed by the Prinsloo 7s at Nakuru Athletics Club on Saturday, 2 to Sunday, 3 August.

After a brief break, teams will regroup for the Christie 7s at Nairobi’s RFUEA Grounds on Saturday, 16 to Sunday, 17 August.

The circuit will then conclude with Kabeberi 7s in Nairobi on Saturday, 6 to Sunday, 7 September, and Dala 7s in Kisumu on Saturday, 13 to Sunday, 14 September.

Last season, Kenya Harlequin were crowned champions of the National Sevens Circuit for the first time since 2012.

They were a picture of consistency throughout the campaign, reaching five semi-finals and winning both the Driftwood 7s and Ingo 7s to finish top with 109 points, just ahead of Kabras, who collected 105 points.

It was Quins’ fourth overall title in the history of the circuit, adding to their triumphs in 2005, 2006, and 2012. Their resurgence placed them among the country’s most successful 7s outfits, alongside Impala, Mwamba RFC, and KCB.
