Kenya Cup action resumes on 13 January with the Sugarmen set to play away to Homeboyz

Captain George Nyambua has set his gaze on propelling Kenya Cup defending champions Kabras RFC to retain their title for the third time in a row.

The Sugarmen first won the title in the 2016 season after defeating current Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) Championship side Impala Saracens.

They would go on a five-year title drought before winning the 2021/22 season after seeing off Menengai Oilers 34-28.

The Kakamega-based team retained their title in the 2022/23 season by defeating KCB Rugby 19-9 in the final played at the ASK Kakamega Showground on March 11.

According to Nyambua who doubles up as the Kenya Simbas captain, he aims at retaining the title for the Sugarmen this season.

"As a captain, I need to win the Cup three times before I leave the seat," he told Mozzart Sport.

The talented flanker is placed third on the try-scoring chart after Kenya Cup week three action with five tries. He scored a brace against Kisumu and a hat trick against Nondies RFC. He was not in action when the team hosted CUEA Monks.

He aims to be the 2023/24 Kenya Cup season's top try scorer.

"I am looking forward to being the top try scorer this season, and I am hoping to defend my Kenya Cup title," he averred.

For Nyambua, the inclusion of new faces in both the Simbas and Shujaa squad spells a great future for Kenya Rugby. He expressed confidence in the young pool of talented players, noting that they would take the sport to higher levels.

"We have a bright future in Kenya. Now that we have a good setup both for Kenya 7s and Kenya 15s, we have a pool of players that will make a bright future for Kenya," he remarked.

Kabras RFC kicked off their title defense with a 72-12 victory over former KRU Championship side Kisumu RFC before handing Nondies RFC a 40-0 defeat. They ended their year with a resounding 78-0 victory over the Catholic University of East Africa (CUEA) Monks.

They will resume the league on January 13 with an away match against Homeboyz RFC.
