The affiliates have called for an immediate resolution to KRU’s governance challenges, warning against the risk of mismanagement and poor leadership creeping into the sport

The KRU Nationwide League affiliates have raised concerns over the ongoing governance turmoil within the Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) Board, warning that the instability is negatively impacting the growth and development of rugby in Kenya.

In a statement released on Tuesday 18 March, the affiliates expressed their deep concern about the conflict at the top leadership of KRU, which they argue is affecting the Nationwide League, the backbone of Kenya’s rugby structure.

The affiliates have called for transparency and accountability from the KRU leadership, specifically demanding an explanation from Chairman Alexander “Sasha” Mutai and Honorary Secretary Raymond Olendo regarding the root cause of the boardroom conflicts.

They have requested that both officials attend their next meeting before the upcoming KRU Annual General Meeting (AGM) scheduled for Tuesday 25 March, to address their grievances.

“As stakeholders in the game, we demand a clear explanation of what is happening within the KRU Board. The leadership instability is affecting grassroots rugby, and we need answers,” read part of the statement signed by Nationwide Rugby League Affiliates Chairman Walter Orangi, Secretary Martin Mugambi, and Legal Representative Hansen Omido.

The affiliates have urged all Nationwide League teams to unite and take a firm stand in addressing their concerns. They emphasized the importance of ensuring that the Nationwide League, which plays a critical role in developing rugby talent, receives the respect and support it deserves.

“It is time for the Nationwide League to assert its influence and demand the recognition it deserves. We must stand together, remain informed, and make collective decisions that safeguard the future of rugby in Kenya,” the statement continued.

With growing frustrations over inadequate support from KRU, the Nationwide Rugby League affiliates have proposed seeking an independent sponsor to sustain the league. They argue that self-sufficiency is necessary to guarantee the league’s continued growth and stability.

The affiliates have called for an immediate resolution to KRU’s governance challenges, warning against the risk of mismanagement and poor leadership creeping into the sport.

They reiterated their commitment to advocating for good governance, fairness, and equitable support across all rugby divisions in Kenya.

“We reaffirm our commitment to safeguarding the future of rugby in Kenya. We will not relent until our concerns are addressed and necessary action is taken,” the statement concluded.

With the KRU AGM fast approaching, it remains to be seen how the union’s leadership will respond to these concerns and whether meaningful steps will be taken to restore stability within the sport’s national governing body.
