Mwamba RFC concluded their Kenya Cup season with a bittersweet victory, overcoming Kenyatta University's Blak Blad 29-15 in a physically intense encounter played on Saturday, 8 March at the RFUEA Grounds in Nairobi.
Despite the triumph, their fate was sealed as they suffered relegation due to an inferior head-to-head record against Impala.
Heading into the match, Mwamba, under the guidance of coach Mark Mshila, needed a win to bolster their survival chances.
They delivered an inspired performance, with Tony Onyango converting an early penalty to set the tone for the match.
The game remained tightly contested, with both teams struggling for dominance. Mwamba added another three points following a Blak Blad infringement before Daniel Oyoo pulled one back for the university side, ensuring a tense 9-6 scoreline at halftime.
The second half saw a reinvigorated Mwamba storm the pitch, scoring two quick tries, with Brian Ayimba touching down and the subsequent conversion pushing their lead to 21-6.
Blak Blad, desperate to claw back into the game, added points through penalties, but Mwamba’s resilience proved too much. Steve Sikuta capped off their dominant display with another try, securing the win.

However, Mwamba’s victory was overshadowed by the reality of relegation. They finished the season tied at 16 points with Impala, but the head-to-head rule condemned them to the second tier. It was a cruel twist of fate for a team that fought until the final whistle.
The match was not without drama. In a chaotic moment, referee Victor Oduor found himself on the receiving end of a missed tackle, hitting the ground before quickly regaining his footing. Meanwhile, emotions boiled over as players engaged in a brief scuffle, adding to the high-stakes tension of the game.
Kabras 25-17 KCB
While Mwamba’s fate was sealed in Nairobi, Kabras RFC continued their dominance in Kakamega, defeating KCB Rugby 25-17 to retain their top-of-the-table position.
The victory extended their incredible unbeaten run to 39 matches in the Kenya Cup, reaffirming their status as the team to beat.
