They will be hosting the final leg of the national 7s circuit, Kabeberi 7s from September 9-10.
Mwamba RFC left the City of Champions, Eldoret in all smiles after claiming third place in the penultimate round of the National 7s Circuit; Tisap 7s that happened at the Eldoret Sports Club over the weekend.
Collins Injera’s charges started their Tisap 7s campaign on a low, following a 19-19 draw against the University of Eldoret Trojans.
They then went down 26-19 Nondies RFC before defeating Nakuru RFC 19-7 to advance to the quarter-final stage.
On day two, the Blackmen showcased a rare combination of class, skills, and resilience to go past Kabras RFC 19-5. Their fine form kept going when they met Strathmore Leos in the semifinals, only for a last-minute try from the students to cut short their dream of getting in the finals. The game ended 8-5 in favour of Strathmore Leos.
Speaking on the team’s performance, Mwamba RFC captain Eliakim Kichoi said that the team was hungry for victory. It was at Tisap 7s where the side finally qualified for the semifinals. Mwamba RFC have been crushing out at the main cup quarter-finals in the opening four legs. They finally broke the jinx.
“It was a good show. I give all credit to the boys for their composure throughout the tournament, they were tough matches but managed to give their best. We had experienced a draw and a loss so the only thing remaining was victory and we went for it with everything that we had,” he said.
Mwamba RFC also produced the top try scorer; Brian Mutugi who was making a comeback from an injury. Mutugi also recently joined Mwamba RFC from Homeboyz RFC. He was not only pleased with his team’s performance but also himself for impressing in Tisap.
“It is way motivating to me. When a player gets injured, it is a very dark time for them, so, when you come back and emerge the top try scorer, and your team wins the third place, it is so motivating and I am happy for the team, and for myself,” he revealed.
According to Mutugi, teamwork gave them the much-needed win against Kabras RFC.
“Against Kabras, we knew we had the game but we were a bit tense. It was teamwork. We played for each other. We beat Kabras RFC and we were encouraged, but it was tough luck against Strathmore Leos,” he offered.
Mutugi further credited his good performance to the warm welcome from his teammates and the entire coaching staff, giving him a sense of belonging.
“The environment was friendly. It was like home away from home. I am happy and hope to make memories with the boys,” he said.
The Blackmen will be hosting the final leg of the 2023 National 7s Circuit; Kabeberi 7s from September 9-10 at the RFUEA Grounds in Nairobi. Eliakim pointed out that the boys will play their hearts out, and sharpen their skills.
“We'll just polish our systems and re-run them. All teams are coming for that Cup and that makes every opponent a threat,” he disclosed.
“Kabeberi we’ll do the basic play, teamwork, and see what we can achieve. Teamwork makes the dream work,” Mutugi concluded.
