Kulabu posted the perfect start to the year by claiming a win over Leos

Despite chasing the game for majority of the game, Mwamba showed experience and calmness to edge an out of form Strathmore Leos who extend their losing streak to three in a Kenya Cup game played at the Varsity's complex.

Leos were coming off a rough patch after closing the year with back to back defeats to Nakuru and Homeboyz RFC with their only win this season coming against fellow Varsity side MMUST.

Mwamba on the other hand, registered patchy results as they ended 2022 with a defeat to Catholic Monks who in turn bagged their first defeat of the season and picked up wins over Blak Blad and Nakuru after a defeat to Homeboyz.

Reeling from their back to back defeats, Leos started the game like a house on fire as they bagged their first try in the opening minute through Joseph Ayiro with Gideon Makumi adding the extras.

Mwamba were not to be behind for long as they offered instance riposte when Eliakim Kichoi spotted a gap in the Leos defense after gathering from kick off to cross the whitewash with Brian Kivasia leveling the scores.

Luis Kisia's charges regained their lead in the 10th minute when Stephen Osumba split the sticks with his penalty from a scrummaging infringement.

The game's feisty start fizzled off after 15 minutes but Strathmore upped the ante in the closing stages of the first half when Dennis Mbila touched down after some brilliant off load from Richard Liva which curved open the Mwamba defense as Gideon Makumi added the extras to see Leos head to the break with a 17-7 lead.

Mwamba had a contrast start to the second half as they landed a try in the first three opening minutes when Mike Okello powered through the tryline using sheer force as Kivasia completed the full seven points for Kulabu.

The 1983 Kenya Cup champions leveled proceedings in the 54th minute from a penalty off the boot of Kivasia who had only put a foot wrong once in the first half when he missed a penalty.

The game was bubbling to be a tight contest as Brunson Madigu and Kivasia both traded penalties to keep the score level at 20-20.

Tempers flared in the game as there were a number stoppages with both sets of players clashing but Mwamba profited from the melee as Chrispin Omondi benefited from a mix up from two Strathmore players from a long kick to race through the try line with Kivasia again adding the extras for a 27-20 lead.

Mwamba held on for the win to kickstart their year with a victory.
