Mwamba, a Swahili word meaning high point, is clearly on a decline as evidenced by the losses to club they would otherwise wipe the floor with.

Rank outsiders Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) picked up their first win of the season putting up a spirited fight to edge Mwamba 6-12 in a Kenya Cup game staged at the KCB grounds on Saturday 20 March.

The game was off to a frenetic start with MMUST taking the game to Mwamba and showed their level of fitness was a class above Kulabu as the students dominated the opening exchanges.

MMUST made their dominance count in the eighth minute when Samuel Mbeche caught the Mwamba defence napping to touch down between the sticks but John Bahati failed to add the two points from close range as he opted for a drop kick.

Mike Okello was sent to the bin in the 13th minute for a high tackle but MMUST failed to capitalize on their man advantage as Mwamba camped in their half for the better part of the opening half and added three points to make it a two point game.

MMUST finished the half strong as they grabbed a try against the run of play with Lameck Ambetsa going on a lung bursting run from the 22 line to make a try as John Bahati converted to ensure the half ended 3-12.

The second half was a more balanced affair as both teams cancelled each other out and were let down by poor handling as MMUST showed some inexperience while Mwamba's lack of match sharpness came into play.

Mwamba added three points from Charles Kuka with two minutes left on the clock to make it a six point game but could not mount a final charge to win the game but picked up a bonus point after a 12-6 loss.
