Weru has already identified three formidable opponents who will likely pose the toughest challenge

Fresh from their triumphant Impala Floodlit Tournament victory, Menengai Oilers are ready to dive into the 2024/25 Kenya Cup season with renewed energy and confidence.

The Gibson Weru-coached outfit clinched their first-ever Floodies title on Saturday 2 November with a resounding 42-3 win over hosts Impala RFC.

This win was especially meaningful for the Oilers, who have only two Varsity titles in their history and narrowly missed the club title in 2019 in a close defeat to KCB Rugby.

However, Weru has already identified three formidable opponents who will likely pose the toughest challenge.

“Kabras, KCB, and Quins will be tough,” Weru admitted.

Despite that, the former Kenya Sevens star was confident with the team’s pre-season that focused on incremental improvements informed by season reviews and emerging trends in fitness, nutrition, and medicine.

“Our Floodlit run provided valuable feedback on areas that need attention and detail,” he explained.

The squad is not only healthy but also enriched with exciting young players and strategic recruits who are poised to bring fresh energy.

“We’ll give the young players as much exposure as possible while integrating the recruits who are already fitting well into our program,” Weru added.

For the 2024/25 Kenya Cup campaign, the Oilers aim to win as many matches as possible and secure a playoff spot. The tactician’s approach emphasizes preparation, taking each game as it comes, and optimizing players' strengths.

But beyond winning the title, what would a successful season for the Oilers look like?

“I’m focused on improving my players, making them better rugby players, better men, and good citizens,” Gibu replied.

The team will begin their campaign with a home match against Kisumu RFC on Saturday 23 November before travelling to Nairobi a week later to lock horns with Strathmore Leos.

They will welcome Mwamba RFC in their last Kenya Cup match for the year slated for Saturday 7 December.

Following that, the team will play their first Enterprise Cup match on Saturday 14 December.
