Oilers impressed in the Embu 7s played on June 10-11.
Menengai Oilers dynamic duo of Kenya 7s international Dennis Abukuse and Kenya 15s international Beldad Ogeta have expressed pleasure after featuring on the Embu 7s dream team.
Embu 7s was played at the Njukiri Stadium on June 10-11 with Strathmore Leos defending their title after hitting Menengai Cream 26-0 in the finals.
Abukuse and Ogeta were included in the dream team alongside Brunson Madigu, Gabriel Ayimba, Barnabas Owuor, Nygel Amaitsa, Matoka Matoka, all who play for Strathmore Leos.
Abukuse featured for Kenya 7s in the recently concluded World Rugby Sevens Series while his teammate Ogeta was in the Kenya Simbas squad that competed in Currie Cup matches. They both played for Menengai Zuri. Zuri ended the campaign at position three after a 19-12 win over Catholic Monks.
In an exclusive with Mozzart Sport, the duo was pleased with the success, noting that the bigger dream was to see Oilers defend their title. Menengai Oilers are the National 7s Circuit defending Champions after amassing a total of 113 points in the 2022 showpiece.
"Of course the feeling is good, and am happy for making it in Embu. It was really a humbling moment to play before my fans," Abukuse said.
"It was an exciting tournament, personally I took the learning lessons and where to polish. I was very excited to be in the dream team. It was more of team work and excecuting my role in the team," Ogeta told Mozzart Sport.
Zuri finished the campaign below their counterparts Menengai Cream who grabbed second position after a 26-0 loss to Strathmore Leos in the finals. Despite that, the duo was confident that they picked the necessary lessons going forward.
"Going forward, how I wish is things to work our way so that we as team to celebrate more victory and defend our national sevens circuit title," Abukuse stated.
"As a team we came short but took the learning lessons. We are polishing up and ready to serve the circuits with champagne rugby," Ogeta revealed.
Menengai Oilers fielded two teams during Embu 7s; Menengai Cream and Menengai Zuri. This was to give Coach Gibson Weru a wider variety of players to select a firm starting team as the side gears up for the 2023 National 7s Circuit set to kick off on July 1 and 2 in Kisumu.
