The Nakuru-based outfit will face Kenyatta University’s Blak Blad in the playoff slated for Saturday 22 March at the Refinery
Menengai Oilers have been handed a timely boost ahead of their crucial Kenya Cup playoff clash against Blak Blad, with four key players returning.
Skipper Ibrahim Ayoo, scrum-half Samson Onsomu, hooker Emmanuel Mulla, and Kenya Sevens forward John Okoth are back in the squad, providing much-needed reinforcements. Fly-half Abutwalib Wesonga too has returned from injury.
Ayoo, who had been sidelined due to suspension, missed vital matches against KCB, Kabras, and South Coast Pirates after receiving a red card for a high tackle against Nondies in January.
The incident left the Oilers battling with a man down in the second half, but they managed to secure a 34-25 victory. Mulla, too, picked up a knee injury in the same match, ruling him out for several weeks.
Onsomu suffered an ankle injury during training following their dominant 35-0 win over South Coast Pirates on Saturday 8 March.
His absence left a gap in the squad, but his return alongside Wesonga is expected to bring valuable tactical depth to the halfback department.
Speaking to Mozzart Sport, the team’s assistant coach Lawi Buyachi was pleased that their return has given the team the necessary depth going into the quarterfinals.

“Their return is timely heading to a crucial playoff game against a fired-up Blad. Ayoo and Mulla bring their wealth of experience to boost the forwards department giving us more options to work with while the duo of Onsumu & Wesonga brings the much-needed expertise on how we intend to play,” Buyachi offered.
Oilers finished third in the regular season with 47 points. They only lost two games 20-14 to reigning champions Kabras and 29-27 to KCB.
They will be looking to heap misery on Blak Blad and proceed to the semifinals where they will face former Kenya Cup champions KCB Rugby on Saturday 29 March at the KCB Sports Club in Nairobi.
