Mutai officially tendered his resignation during a Special General Meeting (SGM) held at the RFUEA Grounds on Friday, 30 May.

His exit comes barely two years into his tenure, marking a dramatic turn of events at the helm of the Union.

In a statement released by the KRU, Ndale will serve for a fortnight as they deliberate on the way forward.

“Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) wishes to announce the resignation of Mr. Alexander Mutai – Sasha, from his position as Chairman of the Union, effective immediately.

Alexander tendered his resignation in a Special General Meeting that was held at the RFUEA grounds on Friday, 30th May 2025," the statement started.

In response to the vacancy, the KRU Board moved swiftly to install Ndale in an acting capacity for a 14-day period.

Within this window, the Board is expected to convene and elect a new chairman from among its current members, in accordance with the Union’s governance constitution.

"Following this development, the KRU Board has appointed Mr. Moses Ndale as the Acting Chairman of the Union for 14 days, during which the Board will convene and elect a new Chairman from among its current members, as per the Union’s governance constitution,” the statement added.

Ndale has been serving as the Vice Chairman since his election in September 2022 and is now tasked with steering the Union through a transitional phase, amid internal leadership challenges and questions of boardroom integrity that led to Mutai’s departure.

Mutai’s resignation was not without controversy. While addressing the members during the SGM, he cited integrity issues within the board as his main reason for stepping down.

He claimed that some board members had tabled forged Credit Reference Bureau (CRB) clearance certificates during vetting, while others refused to relinquish their positions despite having reached their term limits.

Mutai alleged that these individuals had formed a bloc within the board that undermined his leadership.
