KRU prioritized head-to-head record between relegation candidates Kenya Harlequin and Impala in making the decision

Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) has ended the relegation debate that has been ongoing on which side between Kenya Harlequins and Impala Saracens should be relegated from the Kenya Cup by relegation Impala based on Clause 5.c of the Kenya Cup League manual.

There has been a push and pull over which team should go down after both sides ended the season with 17 points each after 11 rounds of league matches. Saracens finished tenth with an aggregate of -47 while Harlequins ended the season with -69 aggregate.

The debate has been on whether the aggregate or head-to-head comes first in case of a tie with different parties interpreting the rules differently but KRU has now brought the debate to an end by relegation Impala.

According to KRU's League and Fixtures Committee chairman, Hilary Itela the head to head outcome takes precedence in case of a tie and,Impala who lost 29-20 to Harlequin in November now go down to the Championship. The other relegated team is Nondescript RFC.

"In making the determination, the guiding principle was the results of the fixture(s) between the two teams takes precedence over the results of the two teams against the rest of the league participants. The principle remains that the results of the fixture between the two teams takes precedence," Itela told the Daily Nation.

“As such Kenya Harlequins are ranked 10th in the league and Impala Saracens ranked 11th at the end of the regular season and therefore Impala Saracens are relegated to the Championship League in the next season alongside Nondescript.” He added.
