He emerged as the top try scorer in the 2023 Africa Men's 7s tournament-cum-Olympics qualifier that was played in Harare, Zimbabwe.

Kenya 7s winger Patrick Odongo has added another feather to his already decorated cap.

This time, the fleet-footed youngster leads the HSBC SVNS try scorers' chart with seven tries from only two legs of the prestigious series.

During the Dubai 7s, he scored against Paris Olympics champions France and also against Australia in Shujaa's final pool match.

His fine form continued in Cape Town, where he scored against Spain, Argentina, and capped his outing with a brace against Great Britain.

He will be keen to extend his fine form when Shujaa lines up against their Pool C opponents for the Perth 7s. The third leg of the HSBC World Rugby 7s Series kicks off from Friday, January 24 to Sunday, January 26, in Australia.

Kevin Wambua’s charges have been placed in a tough pool that sees them lock horns with Fiji, New Zealand, and Uruguay.

Odongo has been a gem since joining the Shujaa squad.

He emerged as the top try scorer in the 2023 Africa Men's 7s tournament-cum-Olympics qualifier that was played in Harare, Zimbabwe.

The Daystar Falcons' winger was key in Kenya's victory, scoring seven tries in the tournament. Kenya made history by thrashing South Africa 17-12 in a physically brutal final to emerge as champions.

What made his performance even more heartwarming was that he had lost his mother, Sophia Atieno Ogak, just before the tournament. Despite that, he braved the odds and traveled with the squad.

The rugby fraternity dedicated the triumphant victory to Atieno, whose big dream was to see her son represent the country at the international level.

The youngster has since played for Shujaa at the Olympics, helped the team return to the HSBC World Rugby 7s Series, and was part of the team that retained their Safari 7s title.

He was among the six debutants included in the Shujaa squad when coach Wambua took over. The other new faces were Nygel Amaitsa, Samuel Asati, Festus Shiasi, Beldad Ogeta, and William Mwanji.

Other leading scorers in the HSBC 7s Series include Fijians Joji Nasova and Filipe Saturaga, both with seven tries, and American Lucas Lacamp, Ngarohi McGarvey-Black of New Zealand, and Frenchman Celian Pouzelgues, who all have six tries each.
