The team was coming off a forgettable 10th-place finish at the Hong Kong 7s just a week earlier, and they turned the tide with an inspired run in Singapore. Kevin Wambua’s charges reached the final, narrowly losing 21-12 to Fiji in a spirited performance.

The final brought back memories of the 2016 Singapore 7s, when Shujaa, then coached by the late Benjamin Ayimba, stunned Fiji 33-7 to clinch their maiden World Sevens title.

This time, although the result did not go in Kenya’s favour, the journey to the final was a show of the team’s growth in the competitive circuit.

They kicked off their campaign with a 17-7 win over Ireland before breaking their long-standing jinx against France with a narrow 10-7 victory to earn a place in the semifinals.

In the semifinals, they held their nerve to see off Spain 12-5, setting up the much-anticipated showdown against Fiji.

They ultimately finished second, marking their best performance this season. The impressive performance also restored hope among fans as the team eyes the critical Relegation/Promotion playoffs set for next month in Los Angeles.

“You gave it your best and put on a good show. You live to fight another day. Congratulations,” said Raymond Kipchumba.

Keshy Waihenya added, “Fantastic job, boys. You did us proud.”

Peter Owako encouraged the team to keep pushing: “Keep up the good work. Oil all departments so you remain consistent.”

Fredrick Ronoh offered his blessings: “Congratulations, our champions. We are proud of all of you and wish you God’s blessings.”

Robert Karuhiu noted how close the team came to another historic win: “Congratulations, boys. We almost made history again. Job well done. See you in Los Angeles.”

Riq Mutonga was particularly impressed with the team’s defensive discipline: “The defense pattern this whole tournament was something else. We did not concede a try in the first half of the whole tournament.”

Despite the strong showing in Singapore, Shujaa remains ninth in the overall World Sevens Series standings.

Their focus now shifts to the crucial Relegation/Promotion Playoffs in Los Angeles, where they will fight to retain their core status in the Series.

They will face stiff competition in the relegation playoffs, where they will be joined by Uruguay, who were also in last season’s playoffs, Ireland and the USA, who currently sit at the bottom and will be desperate to retain their core status at their home tournament in Los Angeles.
