Kenya’s national sevens team has been placed in a challenging Pool A alongside defending champions Uganda, West African side Ivory Coast, and returning team Ghana.

Uganda, the top seeds, will be aiming to defend their 2024 title, which they claimed after a dominant performance in last year’s edition.

Kenya was represented by their development side, Morans, in 2024, and they finished sixth in that outing, which also took place at the Labourdonnais grounds.

Uganda used the event to chase a spot at the Paris 2024 Olympics, while Kenya used the opportunity to test and develop upcoming talent through Morans, who act as a feeder side to the senior Shujaa squad.

Pool B will see powerhouse South Africa take on Burkina Faso, Zambia, and Nigeria in what promises to be another exciting group.

In Pool C, Madagascar, Zimbabwe, Tunisia, and hosts Mauritius will battle it out.

This year’s competition carries even greater significance, with the top two teams earning qualification to the 2026 Rugby World Cup Sevens (RWC 7s).

As if not enough, the top two finishers, excluding South Africa and Kenya, will be promoted to the HSBC SVNS Division 3, opening doors to more international exposure and competition.

The 2024 edition was played over two weekends: Saturday 29 to Sunday 30 June and Saturday 6 to Sunday 7 July, and it featured 12 teams.

During that edition, Kenya was represented by the Morans squad, which featured Brian Mutua (co-captain), Ben Salem (co-captain), William Mwanji, Dennis Abukuse, Elvis Olukusi, Richard Liva, Gabriel Ayimba, Harmony Wamalwa, Festus Shiasi, Joel Inzuga, Victor Odhiambo, and Edmund Anya.

The team was led by head coach Louis Kisia, with Morgan Ngumbi serving as team manager and John Elly as the physiotherapist.
