Okello has joined Nagato Blue Angels ahead of the 2025 Taiyo Seimei Sevens season.
The electric speedster, who made history in 2022 as the first Kenyan woman to turn professional in Japanese rugby, has left MIE Pearls Women's Rugby Football Club after three standout seasons.
Okello joined MIE Pearls in March 2022 and quickly became a key figure for the Yokkaichi-based side. Her time there was marked by impressive performances in both the 7s and 15s formats, earning her the club’s Most Valuable Player (MVP) award in the sevens category.
In a farewell tribute, her former teammates and coaches praised her talent and work ethic.
"An absolute honour working alongside Janet Okello over the past four years, as yet another incredible opportunity in Japan is uncovered.
A true weapon on the field, Janet knows only one direction: try line. We are looking forward to many more in your new colours, sis; go own that!" they posted on their social media handles.
Her move is a fruition of her continued growth and consistency on the pitch.
Okello, known for her explosive pace and sharp finishing, is expected to carry the same firepower to Nagato Blue Angels as they prepare for the upcoming sevens season.
Among her career highlights with MIE Pearls was the opportunity to play alongside her idol, Portia Woodman Wickliffe.
The two-time Olympic gold medalist and 2020 World Rugby Sevens Player of the Decade joined the Pearls in November 2024, which was a dream come true for Okello, who has long admired the New Zealand legend.
"Be exalted, O God, above the heavens; let your glory be over all the earth. Psalms 57:5," she posted on her social media.
Back home, Okello remains an integral part of the Kenya Lionesses squad.
The Mumias-born athlete has consistently delivered standout performances on the international stage, including during the 2024 HSBC Challenger Series, where she played a pivotal role.
