Two of the four Championship teams will secure a place in next season's Kenya Cup

This coming weekend, the top four teams in the Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) Championship League – the second tier – will be battling to earn promotion to the top flight Kenya Cup after the country’s governing body KRU confirmed the playoff matches.

In the just concluded 2021/2022 Championship regular season, South Coast Pirates finished on top of the league standings on 42 points that came off nine wins and two losses in the eleven matches they played.

They were followed closely by debutants Shamas Foundation who finished one point behind in second place. Catholic Monk placed third on 39 points with former 3-time Kenya Cup winners Mean Machine closing off the playoff places in fourth spot.

Having finished top of the log following their 14-11 win against Kabarak University, Ukunda based SC Pirates will have a home semi-final against Mean Machine who finished fourth in the campaign after falling to Shamas Foundation on the final day of the season.

Surprise package South Coast Pirates will be featuring in the semis for the first time as Machine seek to get back to Kenya Cup after last year’s heart break at Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology.

The other semi-final pairing will see newbies Shamas Foundation who finished in second position take on former Kenya Cup side Catholic Monks.

In the semis that will be played on Saturday 19 March 2022, winners will get automatically promoted to the Kenya Cup where they are set to replace Nondescripts RFC and Impala Saracens who were relegated from the top flight.
