Menengai Oilers, KCB and Kabras Sugar extended their perfect Kenya Cup starts with massive wins
Defending champions Kabras Sugar RFC flexed their muscle with a commanding 45-3 victory over newly promoted South Coast Pirates in a Kenya Cup week two fixture played at the Seacrest Grounds in Diani, Kwale County, on Saturday 30 November.
Kabras started the game on the back foot when fly-half Jone Kubu received a yellow card in the early minutes. However, Kubu redeemed himself shortly after his return, scoring the opening try of the match, which Eric Cantona coolly converted.
The Sugarmen kept their foot on the pedal, with Teddy Akala powering over for the second try. Cantona’s conversion was flawless, extending the visitors’ lead.
Griffins Chao continued the onslaught with a third try for Kabras, and Kubu added the extras to make it 21-0 by halftime. The home side struggled to match the intensity of the defending champions, finding themselves pinned back and unable to breach Kabras’ solid defense.
The second half followed a similar script, with Kabras asserting their dominance. Kubu scored his second try of the game before Roy Maruti crossed the whitewash for another five-pointer. Kubu, showing his all-around brilliance, converted Maruti’s effort to further widen the gap.
South Coast Pirates found a small consolation when Kelly Akeng’o slotted a penalty after Kabras conceded an infringement. It turned out to be their only point of the match as the visitors maintained a tight defensive wall.
Captain George Nyambua added his name to the scoresheet, diving over for another try, which Kubu converted with precision. The icing on the cake came in the dying minutes when Gabriel Adero sprinted over the line to score Kabras’ final try, capping off an emphatic victory.
Despite the defeat, South Coast Pirates head coach Kevin Amiani praised his team’s effort.
“Playing against the defending champions is no easy task. We came here to learn and test ourselves against the best, and there’s a lot we can take away from this game to improve.
We will improve on our defense and setpieces as we wait to face Impala RFC next weekend," Amiani told Mozzart Sport.
Pirates will now shift their focus on a trip to Nairobi, where they are set to face Impala RFC on Saturday 7 December. Meanwhile, Kabras will look to maintain their perfect start to the season as they host Kisumu RFC in Kakamega.
At the same time, former Kenya Cup champions KCB Rugby heaped an 82-3 misery on Kisumu RFC in a match played at the Mamboleo Stadium in Kisumu. The match left no doubt about the Bankers' intentions this season. They were coming off a 95-5 victory over the Pirates.
Gibson Weru's Menengai Oilers were also the big winners of the weekend after defeating Strathmore Leos 38-8 in the match played at the Strathmore Leos Grounds.
