Former Kenyan rugby international and National Olympics Committee of Kenya (NOC-K) athlete representative Humphrey Kayange has challenged the next generation of emerging stars to believe in achieving anything they set out to do after his historic induction to the 2021 World Rugby Hall of Fame.

On Wednesday 27th October 2021, Kayange made history as he became the first Kenyan to be inducted to the prestigious Hall of Fame alongside five other athletes who were also picked up for the prestigious nomination.

Kayange who played in the Rio Olympics Games was a member of the World Rugby bid team that convinced the International Olympic Committee (IOC) members to elect rugby sevens to the Olympic programme back in October 2009. Following his stellar involvement in and around the sport, the 2009 and 2013 World Rugby Seven Player of the Year nominee went on to cement his legendary status with the induction.

While expressing his delight in becoming inductee number 150, Kayange extended his accolade to the cast that makes rugby become possible as he spared a word for the next generation whom he hoped would draw inspiration from his unprecedented feat.

“May this award be an appreciation to all those playing, coaching or mentoring and who give so much of themselves to rugby and sport. May the dream of becoming greater than our good inspire young athletes in our schools and communities to believe that they too can be the next generation of stars. May sport always have its place in shaping our societies, producing responsible citizens and promoting healthier lifestyles,” Kayange posted on his social media portal.

The Kenyan, who was this year, elected to the IOC’s Athletes’ Commission and as an IOC Member, to further rugby’s voice within the Olympic movement, also expressed his delight at getting the induction alongside rugby greats such as Osea Kolinisau who captained Fiji to their first-ever Olympic medal with gold at Rio 2016.

“It is such an honour and privilege to be inducted alongside five other legendary rugby greats, while at the same time looking upon the recognition with humility and appreciation. The award for me is bigger than I as an individual. It is a reflection of the support I have had throughout my career and gratitude to all my teammates, coaches, family, friends, fans and organisations. Thank you to the World Rugby Hall of fame for the induction and the rugby fraternity locally and abroad, I can't thank you enough for the platform and support. I have received all your messages and I'm humbled by the appreciation,” he remarked.
