We reveal why the player has not been involved with the team in recent games.

Kenya Simbas ace Jone Kubu is set to link up once again with the national rugby 15s side on Sunday 12 June 2022 after the team’s last Currie Cup Division One clash this weekend against Eastern Province Elephants, Mozzart Sport can confirm.

Last Saturday, a large part of the home fans were wondering where the Fijian born Kenyan international was as the Kabras RFC playmaker was neither on the pitch, on the bench nor even the stands as the team triumphantly battled against South African side Leopards at the RFUEA Grounds.

Mozzart Sport can reveal that the reason for Kubu’s absence was due to the player travelling back to his native country after not being able to do so for more than three years due to challenges compounded by COVID-19.

Simbas head coach Paul Odera confirmed the player had been given compassionate leave to fly back home before the team gets to the business end of taking part in the 2023 Rugby World Cup qualifiers set to be held in France from 1-10 July.

“Kubu will be back on 12th June. He is on compassionate leave right now but afterwards he will be back with us,” he told Mozzart Sport.

Another player from the camp also highlighted that the break was crucial for Kubu who needed time to clear his mind ahead of such a big task.

“He had not seen his family for a very long time. Ahead of such a big tournament, it was wise for him to just spend time reconnecting with them and to get his head space into the right frame. We all know what he can do with the ball and that is why he is needed at 100% without anything clouding his mental frame,” the source explained.

A couple of weeks ago, the player, who can fit both as a flyhalf and a full back, cheekily tweeted his delight after arriving home.

"Crab with coconut milk. I'm officially home," he posted.

This Saturday, the Simbas will host Elephants at the RFUEA Grounds hoping for a repeat of last weekend’s impressive display that saw them thrash Leopards 51-35 for their second win in the tournament.

The team will then have a one week break before hitting camp once again for the World Cup qualifiers.
