With his recent debut, Joel is determined to build on this legacy, inspired by his brothers' achievements and driven to make his own impact in the sport.

Joel Mboya recently marked a proud moment for his family and Nakuru RFC when he made his debut at the Dala 7s, becoming the third member of the Mboya family to play for the club. He is following in the footsteps of his older brothers, John Okoth and Philip Okeyo.

Okoth represented Kenya on the international stage, playing for Shujaa on several occasions, including the Paris Olympics, where they finished ninth. On the other hand, Philip Okeyo made his mark in youth rugby, representing Chipu in the Barthes Cup and the World Rugby U20 Trophy in Scotland, where they finished eighth.

Mboya is eager to continue this legacy and make his own name in the sport. As a first-year student at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT), he brings enthusiasm and talent to each team he plays for, carrying a family legacy deeply rooted in Kenyan rugby.

With his recent debut, Joel is determined to build on this legacy, inspired by his brothers' achievements and driven to make his own impact in the sport.

Mboya traces his passion for rugby back to 2015. Watching his older brothers excel ignited a fire in him to take up the sport himself.

“My elder brothers made me join this sport. I have seen them play, and I drew my passion from there,” he shared.

The youngster revealed that he chose JKUAT not only for its strong academic reputation but also for its vibrant sports culture. He is determined to succeed both academically and in rugby.

Over the weekend, he played in the JKUAT Wazee vs. Vijana tournament, an experience he described as unforgettable, with Wazee defeating Vijana 28-15.

The match featured prominent Kenyan rugby players, including former Kenya Simbas and KCB Rugby captain Curtis Lilako, Bramwell Kilwake, Emmanuel Silungi, and KCB Rugby halfback Lionel Ajeliti.

“The game was amazing. I played against people we only saw on TV—those who played and still play for clubs we aspire to join. I believe experience is what will get us to that high level,” he said.

The youngster’s focus is clear: he wants to continually improve and evolve as a player without succumbing to pressure. He draws inspiration from Menengai Oilers’ ace Dennis Abukuse, whom he described as a highly skilled and talented player.

“My goal is to play better and be the best version of myself. I am not under pressure; I take each game at a time. I hope to emulate Abukuse’s skill and dedication someday,” he explained.

JKUAT Vijana have now shifted their focus to the upcoming Impala Floodlights, slated for October 19, 26, and November 2 at the Impala Grounds.
