Happy Mother’s Day!
As we celebrate mothers around the world this year, let's take a moment to recognize a special group that often doesn't get the spotlight they deserve, mothers in sports.
These inspirational women, not only excel in their respective fields but also, navigate the challenges of motherhood with grace and determination.
Kenya has seen the rise of women in sports over the years who have flown the country’s flag high in different fields.
For instance, during the 2024 Boston Marathon, fans were wowed by Edna Kiplagat who finished third and her children were at the finish line to celebrate with her.
1500m record holder Faith Kipyegon has in the past opened up on how motherhood served as her motivation to perform better in different events.
Two-time Boston Marathon winner Hellen Obiri also adds to the long list of successful mothers in sports.
To mark this special day, Mozzart Sport caught up with Kenya Lionesses’ winger Linet Moraa Arasha who is challenging norms and redefining expectations.
Moraa has proven that motherhood is not a barrier to success in sports; instead, a source of inspiration and motivation.
She is a mother of two; five-year-old Demian Momanyi and a five-month-old Lafi Nyakundi.
She plays for Mwamba Ladies RFC and was part of the team that defended the Women’s Kenya Cup title after a 53-0 victory over Northern Suburbs.
The speedster is currently with the Lionesses in Madagascar for the Rugby Africa Women’s Cup.
“On this day, I would cherish quality time with my kids, maybe a picnic or crafting together, and I also make time for self-care, like a quiet moment or a massage,” she told Mozzart Sport.
Balancing the demands of elite-level rugby with the responsibilities of raising a child is no small feat, but Moraa tackles it with the same determination and grit she displays on the pitch.
“Early mornings for training, then quality time with my kids before nap time. Afternoon training or matches are followed by family dinners and bedtime routines,” she offered.
Despite the challenges brought by juggling the two demanding tasks, Moraa terms her kids a source of inspiration anytime she plays on the pitch. She is simply setting the bar for them.
“The love for rugby and the desire to show my kids that pursuing passions is possible, despite challenges keeps me motivated. Knowing I'm setting an example for them drives me every day. Motherhood has made me more resilient, patient, and focused. On the field, I play with a sense of responsibility, knowing my children are watching. Off the field, I prioritize balance and self-care,” she revealed.
One memorable moment that she forever cherishes was when, her son ran onto the field, eyes gleaming with pride, shouting, "That's my mommy!"
“The most rewarding aspects are seeing my kids proud of my accomplishments and sharing moments of joy and triumph both on the field and at home,” she said.
“I bring my son to matches, let him play with rugby balls, and share stories about teamwork and perseverance. I hope it instils values of resilience and passion in them,” she added.
She advised sports moms to believe in themselves and put their best foot forward, but most importantly to prioritize self-care.
“My advice is to believe in yourself, prioritize self-care, and involve your children in your journey. Remember, pursuing your passion sets a powerful example for them. To all the amazing mothers out there, remember that you're doing an incredible job. Take moments to cherish yourself, your family, and the journey you're on. Happy Mother's Day!” she shared her message.
Sports expert Dr. Kipchumba Byron argues that becoming a mother can actually help sports performance, potentially giving women a different perspective on their sport.
The dual identity of mother and athlete makes them better athletes as it enables them to feel complete in all areas of their life.
At the same time, several factors like physical recovery, training adjustments, mental resilience, support systems and general motivation can influence sports moms to perform better.
