This South African camp will be the first involvement for Injera this year

Veteran rugby player and Shujaa’s all-time try scorer Collins Injera has for the first time this year named in the Kenya men’s national sevens squad that is preparing to fly out to South Africa this Thursday to take part in a ten-day Stellenbosch Solidarity Camp scheduled to take place on 8th/9th and 14th/15th.

Injera, who rejoins the squad after missing out in two previous training camps that took place in Spain and Dubai, was joined by Levi Amunga as the new inclusions to the team.

“We want to give them a chance to see where they are and how they are progressing as well as how the team plays around them. We are also at a stage where we need to expose more players and do more rotation so that we ensure we have an on-form team as we head out for the Olympic games,” head coach Innocent Simiyu remarked about the duo’s inclusion in the squad.

Just a week after jetting back from their Emirates Invitational Sevens exploits, Shujaa entered into a residential camp at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, where the team has been stepping up with their Olympic preparations.

“We are very happy with the progress seen in the team’s performance. The team’s overall target is to keep ticking the right boxes when it comes to the on pitch performance, especially around the set pieces, which has been a key focus during the training sessions. We also aim to get match fitness especially for the new players in the team as well as managing those who have been in the setup,” Simiyu mentioned.

Shujaa are expected to lock horns against hosts South Africa, Uganda and Zimbabwe in those two tournaments. When the team will not be on the pitch rubbing shoulders, the travelling squad will be participating in training both for the players and the coaching staff, something that Simiyu hopes to use to full advantage before the Olympics set in.

We are very happy that this outing is more of a camp because we will have opportunities for our players to do their refresher Level 1 sevens coaching while the management does their Level 2s among other training that will happen off-pitch. We want to maximize fully during this camp so that we’re better equipped when we come back and better prepared going forward,” the head stated as he unveiled the fourteen man squad.
